World fertility rates have been declining dramatically for the last fifty years. From a high of 5.0 children per woman in 1950, the fertility rate has decreased by 44% to 2.8 children per woman in 1999.
Why did fertility decline?
There are many reasons why fertility rates have declined.
There's been a lot of media about falling sperm counts, the deterioration of semen quality over a period of some decades, and so this could has affected the male factor in fertility, in the sense that couples trying to conceive recently, might have more difficulty than equivalent couples might have done two or three decades ago.
In women the egg quality and ovarian reserve definitely decline with age and are perhaps the primary factors causing an age related decrease in female fertility, there may be uterine factors in play as well.
