What is IVF?

IVF started developement in the 1970s. The first UK test tube baby was Louise Brown, and was born in 1978.

Over 30,000 test tube babies have been born in the United Kingdom since then.

There are a few different techniques, but the main method is were the women takes fertility drugs to help her produce more eggs.

The eggs are then harvested and fertilised in the laboratory.

The woman is given hormone drugs to prepare her womb to receive the fertilised eggs.

The fertilised eggs are placed inside the womb and a normal pregnancy follows.

 

Each woman is born with approx 400,000 eggs*

There are only approx 30 days a year to get pregnant*

A woman can loose approx 2 eggs per hour over her fertile life*

The egg can only be fertilised for approx 24 hours per month

Of 100 couples trying to conceive naturally:

• 20 will conceive within one month
• 70 will conceive within six month
• 85 will conceive within a year
• 90 will conceive within 18 months
• 95 will conceive within two years

Around 26% of IVF treatment result in twins or triplets.

Around 6,500 babies a year are born in the UK to infertile couples as a result of in vitro fertilisation.
